SUMMARY:CCVMM Speaker Series - Erik Brun\, "The All Black 54th Central Coast Artillery Regiment"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum (CCVMM) for our next Speaker Series with Historian\, Erik Brun\, and his presentation on the 54th Coast Artillery on the Central Coast during WWII.  Erik Brun\, shares the history and accomplishments of the first Central Coast Black Combat unit to be placed into operation against the enemy in WWII. The unit that had gun positions in Morro Bay\, Avila and Shell Beach. \nIn the three months after Pearl Harbor\, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked vital merchant shipping and shore facilities along the California coast. The War Department’s Western Defense Command ordered the establishment of firing positions between San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz\, to protect the citizens and key defense infrastructure between the Harbor Defenses of Los Angeles and San Francisco. \nThe 54th Coast Artillery Regiment’s 1st Battalion took up positions between Shell Beach\, and Cayucos in April 1942. Erik Brun also discusses how their arrival help shaped Post-war San Luis Obispo. \nSeating is limited. Free admission. SUMMARY:Remembering Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona
DESCRIPTION:The Veterans Museum has prepared a 45-minute presentation to share the history through photos and recorded interviews with historians and veterans about the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7\, 1941\, the sinking of the USS Arizona and the significance of this artifact. \nThe USS Arizona still sits where it first sank in Pearl Harbor after being attacked by the Japanese on December 7\, 1941\, forty feet below the ocean’s surface\, serving as both a memorial and the final resting place for the 1\,177 Navy and Marine servicemembers entombed within the ship’s hull. Included in the Veterans Museum display are photos and items honoring veterans from the Pearl Harbor attack and WWII. The artifact from the USS Arizona will now remain on permanent display in the Veterans Museum\, located in San Luis Obispo. \nThis history presentation and unveiling will take place Wednesday\, December 7th\, 2022 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm\, with doors open at 4:30 for Museum tours\, located at 801 Grand Avenue\, San Luis Obispo\, suite 102. DESCRIPTION:The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum (CCVMM) is hosting their annual Veterans Day Community Celebration!  This year marks their 20th year anniversary. All community members are invited to stop by for special activities\, a hot dog lunch from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm\, and free admission to the museum’s newest exhibition\, “Snapshots of Central Coast Military History”\, co-curated with military historians Daniel Sebby (California Military Museums) and Erik Brun (California National Guard Museum). \nIn addition to free museum tours\, there will be an Appreciation Station setup for letter writing and crafts to be distributed to local veterans in 2023. Visitors are invited to bring a photo of their Central Coast Veteran from past or present (copy of photo recommended) to add to the museum’s Hometown Heroes photo wall. A Vitalant blood drive will be onsite (pre-register online)\, sponsored by American Legion Post 66\, as well as a bounce house for the kids\, and historic military vehicles on display! Organizations have been invited to setup information tables outside including Second Life K-9 Rescue Dogs\, South County Historical Society\, and various veteran service agencies.
