Veterans Museum Guest Speaker Set for October
Learn by Doing – Operation Double Strike
David Blakely, Thursday, October 15, at 4:30 pm
Back in March 2023, David Blakely gave a presentation on Masters of the Air, where he introduced us to his father, Everett Blakely, a World War II B-17 pilot with the “Bloody 100th.” David is coming back, and he will present the history of one of the most significant air battles of World War II. Operation Double Strike – the August 17, 1943 twin attacks on Schweinfurt and Regensburg – marked a turning point in the American daylight bombing campaign.
Capt. Everett Blakely flew in the lead aircraft of the 100th Bomb Group during this mission. Drawing on footage from the Apple TV series Master of the Air and extensive historical research, Blakely will examine the mission’s strategic importance and the hard-won lessons the Eighth Air Force “learned by doing.”
